Most brokers and builders want to rank for the big searches: "flats for sale in Whitefield", "PG in Koramangala", "new projects in Gachibowli". Those are worth working towards. But one search matters more, is far easier to win and is often ignored completely: your own business name.
Who searches your name
Think about how people hear of you. A friend recommends you. They see your board outside a building. They get your number from a portal listing, a WhatsApp forward or a newspaper ad. Before they call, many of them search your name on Google to check you out.
These are the warmest people you will ever reach. They already want to talk to you. What they find decides whether they do.
If they find your website, and a Google Business Profile with good reviews and your RERA number, they call. If they find an old directory page with a wrong number, a portal page showing other people's listings next to yours, or nothing at all, some of them quietly move on. For builders the stakes are higher still; see what buyers find when they search your company name.
Why it is the right place to start
Your own name is the easiest search to win because very few pages are about you. A new website that is set up properly can show up for its own name within a few weeks of Google finding it. That is far quicker than any locality search.
It is also the foundation for everything else. The things that help you rank for your name, a consistent business identity, a verified Google profile and other sites linking to yours, are the same signals Google and AI assistants use to judge that you are a real, trustworthy business when you compete for bigger searches later.
What gets in the way
A few things commonly stop a business from ranking for its own name:
- A generic name, like "Sai Properties" or "Home Solutions", that many businesses share
- Different versions of the name in different places
- A home page titled "Home" or "Welcome" instead of the business name and city
- A site never added to Google Search Console, so Google may barely know it exists
- Nothing else online linking to the website
If your name is generic, add the city or locality everywhere you use it. "Sai Properties Kothrud" is much easier to own than "Sai Properties" alone. If you are still choosing a name or a web address, read choosing a domain name for a real estate business first.
The checklist
Work through this over the next week. Most of it takes minutes.
- Pick one exact form of your business name, with the city or locality if the name is common, and use only that
- Title your home page with your business name and city, for example "Your Firm Name, Property Advisors in Whitefield, Bengaluru"
- Have an about page that says who you are, how long you have worked in the area, your office address and your RERA registration if you hold one
- Have a contact page with phone, WhatsApp, email and address written as text, not inside an image
- Set up or claim your Google Business Profile and link it to your website
- Link to your website from every portal profile, your Facebook and Instagram pages and your WhatsApp Business profile
- Check your name, address and phone number match exactly across all of these
- Add the site to Google Search Console and submit your sitemap
The Google profile is covered step by step in Google Business Profile for a real estate office.
Check what a stranger sees
Your own phone is a poor judge, because Google adjusts results based on your location and history. Open a private tab, or borrow a friend's phone, and search:
- Your business name on its own
- Your business name plus your city
- Your own name, if clients know you personally
- Your business name plus "reviews"
Note what comes up in the first few results, and whether any of it is wrong or out of date. Fix what you control, like old directory listings with a number you no longer use. For what you cannot control, the best answer is to make your own website and profile the most complete, most useful results for your name.
Then aim higher
Once you reliably show up for your own name, you have something to build on. The next step is the longer, specific searches around your listings and localities, and that takes months of steady work, not weeks. But start here. It is the one search where the person searching has already chosen you.
